From the ashes: the Springbok way to small business and jobs

In 2017 the Springboks hit rock bottom. A 57–0 defeat to the All Blacks left a once-feared team looking broken, and the nation had stopped believing. Then a new head coach took over in 2018. He didn’t promise miracles. He built a system: clear roles, depth across the squad, ruthless preparation, and players picked for what they could become, not only what they had been. He named the Springboks’ first Black Test captain, a man who grew up in a township and became a symbol of what South Africa can be when everyone pulls in the same direction. Eighteen months later the Springboks lifted the 2019 World Cup. In 2023 they did it again, winning their knockout matches by a single point each, against France, England and New Zealand. That wasn’t luck. It was structure, belief and a bench that made the team strongest when it mattered most.

South Africa’s youth face their own rock bottom. Around six in ten young people who want work can’t find it. Big companies alone won’t fix that. The jobs will come from small businesses: the bakery that adds a second shift, the plumber who takes on an apprentice, the cleaning company that wins one more contract. But most small businesses don’t fail for lack of talent or hard work. They fail because nobody helped them see their cash, plan their growth or get ready for a loan. They play without a coach.
